The most commonly used formula in commercial and procurement operations is:
Weight (kg/m) = (OD − t) × t × 0.02466
Where:
OD = outside diameter (in mm)
t = wall thickness (in mm)
0.02466 = constant derived from the density of steel (7.85 g/cm³)
This formula provides the approximate weight per linear meter and is widely used in the trading of carbon steel and alloy steel pipes.
Let’s assume we have a pipe with:
Outside Diameter (OD): 219.1 mm
Wall Thickness: 10 mm
Applying the formula:
(219.1 − 10) × 10 × 0.02466= 209.1 × 10 × 0.02466= approximately 51.56 kg/m
If the pipe length is 12 meters:
51.56 × 12 = 618.72 kg per piece
For an order of 100 pieces, the total weight exceeds 61 metric tons. This clearly shows why accurate weight calculation is essential in cost estimation.
For structural or advanced engineering calculations, the volumetric formula based on the ring cross-section can be used:
Weight = π × (R² − r²) × L × 7850 kg/m³
Where:
R = external radius
r = internal radius
L = length
7850 kg/m³ = steel density
This method is typically used in structural engineering, Oil & Gas projects, energy infrastructure and heavy industrial applications.
Accurate steel pipe weight calculation directly impacts:
final order pricing (steel is traded per metric ton)

Even a small variation in kilograms per meter can translate into several tons in large-scale orders.
Even if the formula is correct, the actual weight may vary due to:
